Discord alerts for outages and recovery
Add a Discord channel webhook and PingInsight posts every confirmed outage and recovery as a rich embed — a colored sidebar (red for down, green for recovery) with the monitor, error, and exact downtime as fields. Discord webhooks are rate-limited at roughly 30 requests per minute each, far above normal alert volume, which makes Discord a great fit for community-run services and teams that already live in their server.

🔴 DOWN api.example.com ───────────────────────── Check HTTP Error HTTP 503 Regions us-east-2, eu-west-1 (2 of 3) Detected 14:03:07 UTC (green embed follows on recovery: “Back up after 6m 21s”)
Exact formatting varies by Discord; the live alert includes the monitor, confirming regions, and the precise downtime on recovery.
Frequently asked questions
- Why did my Discord webhook stop working?
- Deleting the webhook in Discord's channel integration settings — or deleting the channel itself — permanently invalidates the URL. Create a fresh webhook, update it under Alerting, and re-test. Webhook URLs contain a secret token, so treat them like passwords.
- Can alerts post into a specific Discord thread?
- Discord webhooks post to the channel the webhook belongs to. If you keep incidents in a dedicated thread, create the webhook on the parent channel and use Discord's own routing, or relay through a signed webhook and the Discord API where thread targeting is supported.
- Could a flood of alerts hit Discord's rate limit?
- Each Discord webhook allows about 30 messages per minute. PingInsight only posts on confirmed state changes, so you'd need many simultaneous outages to approach that. For very large fleets, split monitors across multiple channels and webhooks to stay clear of the limit.
